Russian River Beach Illegal Use Russian River Beach Illegal Use
May 15, 2012
by Vesta Copestakes
Use of private property along the Russian River just west of Sonoma County Regional Park's Steelhead Beach has been going on for years. People Power STOPS Forestville Timber Harvest People Power STOPS Forestville Timber Harvest

By David Herr

Most people feel helpless when it comes to impacting the outcome of an event. Yet they DO have influence, and they CAN effect change. What it takes is having enough people to be heard - and solid information to gain respect..

We changed the outcome of a tree removal in my neighborhood by contacting people who had the power to stop the operation before long-term permanent damage occurred. In the process, we learned that laws and systems in place are not enough, and that oversight is essential to protect our environment from ignorance.

The Land has Chosen You

Wendell Berry (In That Distant Land) writes that the land we live on is more than money, more than what it is “worth.” The land expects something of us. We start expecting things of it; then some of us realize that the expectations are going the other way too. Demands are being made of us, whether we know it or not. The place is not its price. The figures give you the right to call it yours for a little while. When you quit living in the price and start living in the place, you are in a different line of succession, which continues from Native Americans, to early settler families, to recent residents. The land has chosen us. “Everything about a place that is different from its price is a gift. The life of a neighborhood is a gift.”

Gratitude

One antidote to the anxiety and fear for the new year is to be grateful for all that is good in our lives. On Thanksgiving morning, I awoke to sunlight streaming through my bedroom window and to the sounds of drumming and chanting.

The Dog Days of Summer

No rain, hot days – the Dog Days of Summer have arrived – to run through August. These were thought by the Greeks to be brought by the rising of the Dog Star, Sirius, with the sunrise. It’s a beautiful and quiet season in Forestville. Even the dogs are flaked out in the shade.

Chris O’Neil, lead owner of Russian River Vineyards (RRV), and Dennis Judd, owner of the American Winery property, are partnering to build a new production facility for RRV on the American Winery property.  RRV’s lease on its current production location in Graton runs out in 2017; a new facility is needed. Rather than build it in the limited area next to RRV vineyards andCork’s restaurant, Chris is delighted to have found this site so close to home.  It will be only a short and beautiful walk on the West County Trail between Cork’s and the new facility.
