A friend grew heritage roses, heavily perfumed, inspiring me to hunt roses for our yard. We needed tidy varieties for small spaces. I began a notebook with pages of cutout blossoms and lists of roses by size, growth habit, floral color, and fragrance.

Face-to-face talks with landscapers did not always go well. I showed each my notebook and I tried to speak clearly of my hopes and dreams. One afternoon as I walked the front yard with a designer, I said, “I want organic roses.”

This autumn, a lifelong dream of mine came true. I visited Washington, D.C. and the neighboring region. Walking the gardens and the orchards of Mount Vernon changed my image of George Washington. Books and portraits rarely capture his love for the fields, forests, and rivers of Virginia. On horseback, Washington oversaw all aspects of farming. The quote above comes from one of his personal letters.

Time to Do The Fire Prevention Polka

Rancho Adobe Fire District rates our area’s fire risk as high. The dry pastures and hillsides make it plain for us to see. The Blue Gum Eucalyptus trees Cotati’s early ranchers planted in row after row burn in minutes. These century-aged giants once thought of as pricey hardwood such as walnut or oak now shade our neighborhoods as they dangle terribly close to homes.

Face-to-face talks with landscapers did not always go well. I showed each my notebook and I tried to speak clearly of my hopes and dreams. One afternoon as I walked the front yard with a designer, I said, “I want organic roses.”
