Sonoma County Theatres Big Winners
at Critics Circle Awards
By Harry Duke
Representatives of Sonoma County theatre companies made numerous trips to the Winner’s Circle at the 38th Annual San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle “Excellence in Theatre for 2013” Awards Gala, held on May 5th at the California Ballroom in Oakland. The Critics Circle is comprised of twenty critics from throughout the nine Bay Area counties. Sonoma County members include David Templeton, Harry Duke, and Greg and Suzanne Angeo.
Sonoma County theatre companies received 31 nominations over the 22 categories recognized by the Circle. The categories were further divided into “house sizes” so that theatre companies would be evaluated with other similar-sized productions. Those divisions were “house with under 100 seats”, “house with 100 to 300 seats”, and “house with over 300 seats.”
Petaluma’s Cinnabar Theater snagged three awards for their production of “La Cage Aux Folles”. Sheri Lee Miller won awards for Costume Design and Stage Direction, and Valentina Osinski took home the award for Featured Actress in a Musical.
Cinnabar’s Artistic Director Elly Lichenstein was presented with the 2014 Jerry Friedman Award, a lifetime achievement award which is given to an individual who has furthered the creativity and growth of theater in the Bay Area throughout his/her career.
Santa Rosa’s 6th Street Playhouse had two productions take home awards. “Red” was recognized for its Ensemble, and “The Rocky Horror Show” took home awards for Principal Actor in a Musical (Rob Broadhurst) and Principal Actress in a Musical (Julianne Lorenzen).
Rohnert Park’s Spreckels Theatre Company was the big Sonoma County winner for the evening, receiving six awards for their production of “Young Frankenstein”. It was the single most recognized production at this year’s awards. Michella Snider was acknowledged for Choreography, Sandy and Richard Riccardi for Music Direction, Mary Gannon Graham for Featured Actress in a Musical, and Denise Elia-Yen for Principal Actress in a Musical. It also took the awards for Ensemble and Entire Production.
Along with the Awards, nominees and guests were treated to an evening of food and libations along with live performances by Leanne Borghesi, Marty Nemko, and Tal Ariel.
