Astrology - February 2010 by Rio Olesky

Normally, Jupiter transits through one sign approximately every 12 months. This year, however, Jupiter will transit through at least parts of three signs. Starting in Aquarius, it transited into Pisces on January 17 but remains there only until June, when it enters Aries. It remains in Aries until September, when it retrogrades back into Pisces. The last time Jupiter made so many changes was 1999, the next time will be 2021. So, like many other things this year, Jupiter it acting in unusual ways.

Jupiter is a co-ruling planet of Pisces and thus very powerful in that sign. Its journey through that sign suggests an increase in spirituality in the sense of striving for a direct and personal connection to Divine Spirit. This could lead to an increase in people meditating, taking yoga classes or paying more attention to their dreams. This transit also can lead to a time of humanitarian concern for our fellow beings. Striving to help the less fortunate among us can stimulate generous charitable contributions, volunteer service and revised interest in the Peace Corps. Perhaps President Obama will call upon our citizenry to accept compulsory service in an agency or organization that promotes health and well-being.

Part of the challenge of Jupiter in Pisces is not to get carried away with excessive, idealistic expectations. We could expect more from ourselves than we can realistically achieve, or we could expect more from others than is going to be forthcoming. In either case we are left feeling either drained and overextended or disillusioned and disappointed. This could be especially true when Jupiter enters Aries and immediately conjuncts Uranus. Astrologers observe planetary cycles and note when certain patterns happened in the past as a way of surmising what might happen this time around. For example, that last time that Jupiter and Uranus were in Aries was 1927. The late 1920s was, of course, just prior to the Great Depression which saw a combination of a stock market crash and bank closures. This is all too similar to what is happening already and could continue throughout the year. The good news at that time was a previously unprecedented period of innovative expansion in technology. This time the technology could, among other things, bring a proliferation of prosthetic devices and other body parts. Much of that innovation as a result of the recent mapping of the DNA genome.

Aries is an independent, assertive sign known for its courage and willingness to get involved in new activities. Jupiter can bring opportunities and prosperity. We could assume that this summer, when Jupiter is in Aries, the job market could open up. New venture capital pouring into new businesses and even new industries could lead to new jobs. This is a small window of opportunity that might re-open once Jupiter re-enters Aries in 2011, so for now we should expect modest growth of new jobs, especially since Jupiter will be in opposition to Saturn, the energy of limitation.

Aries can also be impulsive, judgmental and one-dimensional in its thinking. Jupiter tends to be joyful and optimistic. So, one of the challenges of Jupiter in Aries is to avoid being overly aggressive, attacking someone, verbally or physically, based on the assumption that anyone disagreeing with you must be wrong.

In general, we can use Jupiter in Pisces and Aries as a vehicle through which to be more confident in expressing the consciousness that we have been developing the last few years. Remember that in 2009 Jupiter and Neptune, the co-rulers of Pisces were conjunct in Aquarius. This suggested a new beginning in spiritual and humanitarian thinking. In addition, Uranus, the co-ruler of Aquarius has been in Pisces. This created what astrologers call a mutual reception, with planets residing in each other’s sign. Mutual reception greatly enhances the power of all the planets involved. Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune all pertain to higher consciousness and collective interaction. This year, with Jupiter and Uranus transiting into Aries, it’s time to overtly act out that emerging awareness both individually and collectively.

Aries: Jupiter and Uranus don’t enter Aries until late spring. In addition Mars, your ruling planet, remains retrograde. So bide your time and avoid impulsive actions based on frustration or restlessness. This is a good time to make plans for the future. While engaged in that process, however, you could also play. Have fun and be creative. This can help the time go by in more enjoyable ways.

Taurus: This could be a good time to get more involved in social activities that combine either artistic or spiritual pursuits. Joining a meditation group, an artist’s or writer’s support group or a dream analysis group could provide an opportunity for psychological clarity or creative productivity. Growth comes from remaining clear about your goals and limits in your involvement with others.

Gemini: Early month is a good time to implement plans and goals you had envisioned the last two months. This could be a period of disciplined and sustainable manifestation. Late month brings a shot of creative imagination that could benefit you artistically. This would also be a good time for insights into your children and your relationship to them.

Cancer: Mid-month could bring heightened awareness about the global situation combined with insights into your own financial situation. Late month brings the energy to act on those thoughts in both areas with clarity and confidence. There may even be the willingness to shift some fundamental priorities that could enhance your material security in the future.

Leo: Relationship issues are in high focus for you this month. In general the energy is very good. You could experience a deep sense of devotional love for your partner and express those feelings with generosity in a variety of ways. Growth for you comes from being realistic about both how much you can afford to give and what you can expect to receive in turn. Striving for balance in the interaction can lead to real harmony.

Virgo: The full Moon in Virgo on the 28th can bring a heightened sense of emotional self-awareness that, in turn, can help clarify feelings for others. This also provides an opportunity to get out of your often over active linear, analytical mind and access your intuitive right brain. Growth comes from taking action based on decisions made from information gleaned in this way.

Libra: Artistic activities as well as time spent with children and lovers can bring deep feelings of happiness and satisfaction in early month. From mid-month on, focus more on practical matters involving work and health. This is a good time take advantage of new opportunities presented to you or to expand something that you are already doing. This is also a good time to initiate a new health maintenance routine.

Scorpio: This is a good month to play and enjoy your life. Spending time with children could prove to be harmonious for all concerned. Being involved with romantic activities could also prove fulfilling. Between social activities, be creative. Your aesthetic juices are flowing, especially from mid-month on.

Sagittarius: The Jupiter transit through Pisces could take you in one of two directions. One is staying close to home. Enhancing relationships with family members or being reclusive and enjoying quality time alone could bring feelings of joy and satisfaction. The other pull could be to leave the residence and travel. You also might enjoy staying home this month and planning a fabulous journey later in the spring or fall.

Capricorn: This is a good time to take stock of where you are professionally and where you want to go. Do some research and plan some strategy, but wait to actually take action until at least mid-March. When thinking about a change, factor in values and priorities as well as the pragmatic consideration of money. In the long run, the integration of all three of those factors will bring the greatest sense of fulfillment.

Aquarius: This is a good month for social activity. Some of it could be simply for the enjoyment of it. Some could be networking and data gathering about practical issues that could directly involve your work or your financial situation. Spending some time in artistic activities could provide clarity about certain issues as well as provide a deep sense of spiritual connection.

Pisces: This is a good time for intellectual inspiration combined with the ability to communicate those ideas to others. You could even feel motivated to do some creative writing. Social activities could also prove enjoyable, especially in early month. In general, this is a period of clarity and confidence and sharing your energy with others should benefit all concerned.

Astrology Jan 2010

Allow the New Year to start slowly. We often have a tendency to try to hit the ground running after the first. Whether due to New Year’s resolutions, overindulging during the holidays or simply perceiving an opportunity for new beginnings, we could start the year with lots of energy and enthusiasm. This year begins with Mars retrograde, indicating that our overall drive and energy level will tend to be lower than usual.

What is begun when Mars is retrograde will often not reach the end that is sought or, if it does, the results may be unfulfilling. This is a time of research and planning. Considering the challenges coming from some of the other transits this year, taking time to get things going and being more thoughtful and thorough in our strategizing will pay dividends in the long run.

The challenging transits are primarily continuations of what we’ve been experiencing in the recent past with a couple of exceptions. The ongoing patterns are the square between Saturn and Pluto, and the opposition between Saturn and Uranus. This year those two transits will coincide in an aspect dynamic called a T-square. I will be writing more about this as the year progresses. Suffice to say at this point that we will be challenged to respond to influences that require integration between stability of tradition in one area, with innovative, progressive, cutting edge change in another. Tying those forces can facilitate major transformations in our lives. For many of us this will lead to closing some part of our life and being open to starting something new. This can be an exhilarating experience no doubt, but one often fraught with trepidation. One of the challenges, therefore, is to respond to the impending transformations with an attitude of surrender to the process. Attempting to hang on to the past, or to parts of our lives that are over or outgrown is an exercise in futility that can only increase the difficulty of the process. Surrender enables us to take an active part in the creation of the new ideas, perspectives and possibilities that are unfolding before us daily.

One of the new developments this year is Uranus transiting into Aries in late May. It will retrograde back into Pisces in August and return to Aries in March of 2011, where it will remain for approximately 7 years. The past 7 years that Uranus has been in Pisces has seen the proliferation of changes in areas that Pisces focuses on, such as the arts. Pisces by nature is a gentle sign. It is more oriented toward transcendent awareness than in physical manifestation. It is probably the least ego centric of the 12 signs. It replaces the need for ego gratification with the drive to acquire wisdom. Uranus is about change. Sometimes the changes are inspired and oriented toward personal or consciousness liberation. Other times the changes are haphazard, extreme and counter productive of anything other than change for the sake of change. Many of the changes that Uranus in Pisces has offered us have been internal, focused more on consciousness and our connection to the universe than on personal expression or behavioral interaction. That will change with Uranus entering Aries. Aries is a fire sign, it is about expressing the self in a direct, assertive, authentic way. Whereas Pisces can be subtle and nuanced, Aries is bold and self-affirming. Pisces can be aware of the complexity of things, Aries tends to perceive things one dimensionally. On the other hand, Pisces can be dreamy, idealistic and self-deceptive in its awareness or choices. It can be easily distracted or dissuaded from acting in accordance with truth or reality. Aries has no such problems. Although at times it may be impatient or opinionated, it always remains true to itself.

One of the challenges of Uranus in Aries is being too impulsive in our actions. We could feel so clear in our inspiration and right in our choice of action that we fail to see any difficulties on the path until we bump into them. Yet, Uranus in Aries is clearly an indication that new options are on the way. The time of deliberation and analysis of Uranus in Pisces is ending. So one challenge we face this year is to integrate the wisdom and psychic sensitivity of Pisces into our decision-making and taking action with Uranus in Aries.

Another new dynamic this year is Jupiter entering Pisces, which will take place on January 18. Jupiter is the co-ruler of Pisces and is said to be in its dignity in that sign. This means that the nature of Jupiter will be easily expressed. Jupiter pertains to the principle of expansion. This can include an attitude of gratitude and joyfulness, a desire to develop the consciousness through learning or travel and a willingness to share what one has in a spirit of generosity and inclusiveness. Even though Uranus will leave Pisces temporarily this year, the presence of Jupiter more than accommodates Uranus’ absence.

We could assume that this transit will increase diplomatic efforts between nations and humanitarian attitudes among people. This could lead to an increase in charitable donations, more people interested in things like the Peace Corps or even a call from politicians for some type of national service for youth. This could also bring about increased interest in indigenous cultures from the point of learning from them rather than seeking to exploit them or their natural resources. Similarly, the Jupiter in Pisces transit suggests an increase in both religious fervor as well as spiritual seeking, often two entirely different experiences.

So take your time and ease into the New Year. There may have fireworks on New Year’s Eve, but there will definitely be explosions that we will all have to address and deal with throughout the year. The more centered we are the better we will be able to respond to the challenges with awareness and creativity.

Aries: This is a good time to increase self-awareness through interaction with others. Spending time with friends or colleagues could facilitate more in understanding how you affect others, and how they affect you. Growth comes from replacing judgment, either of self or others, with a deepening realization of the intentions behind your actions.

Taurus: This is time to expand your social horizons. Be open to people whom you might not normally associate with. Experiment with different behavioral patterns that may feel risky simply because they are new. Growth comes from being more inclusive of others, since this can lead to being more accepting of parts of yourself that may feel awkward.

Gemini: Deep analysis and thorough contemplation can lead to clear understanding about fundamental and profound elements of your life. This could involve deepening personal relationship, updating your values, finding your way through financial challenges or feeling more comfortable with your place in the universe. Answers are found more abundantly through deepening of the mind than through social activity.

Cancer: Ease into your New Year by spending time in artistic pursuits as well as spending romantic time with your partner. You may often be spontaneous and like to be in the flow of the moment. This is a time to be more organized, defined and self-disciplined in order to take advantage of the gentle, harmonious energy available to you this month.

Leo: Some Leos find this time of year difficult. The cold and darkness seemingly take away your normal radiance and positivity. This year offers you a way out of those doldrums. The key is to spend time with people you really care about. This could be a partner or very good friends. Entertaining in your home or engaging in shared creative projects can get your year off to a beautiful start.

Virgo: Spending time clarifying values now can enable you to be more productive in generating stability and security later on. However, remember to include everything that has meaning to you, not just on the material plane. Growth can come from integrating things that you want and like to do with things that are more necessary.

Libra: This could be a more playful time for you than for most other signs. Expressing yourself artistically, romantically or recreationally can help the year get off to a pleasurable start. Whatever you do, try to make it easy and effortless. Sharing the activities with others enhances the experience and can enable you to make new friends or find new ways of being social.

Scorpio: Clearing up old problems with siblings, neighbors or good friends can be an uncomfortable but beneficial way to start the year. After deep contemplation, engage the other person in ways that bring the problems out in the open and thus lead to acceptable resolutions for all.

Sagittarius: Jupiter is your ruling planet. Its presence in Pisces all year could lead to a joyful connection to family and an increased sense of connection to your inner being and higher self. Travel would be educational and real estate dealings beneficial. Growth comes from taking advantage of these opportunities without getting carried away with dreamy idealism.

Capricorn: Early month can bring a desire to be social and the ability to relate to others in comfortable, harmonious ways. Around mid-month take some time to review professional activities. This could involve anything from satisfaction on the job now to long range career goals. This is not a time of action. Contemplation, analysis and planning of strategy is the way to go at this time.

vAquarius: Positive changes in your financial situation could manifest in mid-month. Help may be close at hand that enables either shifts at that time or the clarity to make changes later on. Spend time reviewing the nature of your finances, and clarify your material needs, before making any decisions or taking any action.

Pisces: Jupiter is your co-ruling planet and its transit into Pisces bodes well for you throughout the year. It will enhance your sense of self-worth and self-confidence. It can impel you to expand your horizons through travel or higher education. It can also enable you to feel more comfortable in the social world even as you affirm and deepen the fulfillment of your spiritual path.

Wheel of Light: December 2009

December is the darkest month of the year. It calls on us to go inside, both in the context of indoors as well as within ourselves. This is a time to contemplate, past choices and actions as well as to plan for new beginnings in the New Year. This year we have a useful tool with which to do this. Mars, the planet of action, initiation and assertiveness turns retrograde on December 20th. and remains so until March 10th.

Mars pertains to anything we do that is physical, from working out, to building something, to being sexual. It retrogrades approximately every two years, for about ten weeks. The longer Mars remains retrograde, the less physical drive and energy we have. So, in combination with the season, this is not a time to start anything significant. Our interest in the project may dissipate and our interest in completing it follows accordingly. If circumstances conspire to demand that we must start something at this time, it’s advisable to start slowly and allow the activity to pick up speed once Mars turns direct.

This is not to suggest that we just focus on the present and forget everything else. Mars retrograde is a good time to complete previously unfinished projects. It’s a good time to research things to do in the future and even to plan and strategize when to start and the best ways to do them.

Mars is in the sign Leo, and will remain there the entire time it is retrograde. Leo can very loving and playful. It is creatively expressive, sexual and athletic. Thus, in general, review and pan activities that involve these qualities. If you know or have a copy of your natal horoscope, you can personalize this transit even more by noting the house (area of life experience) where the sign Leo resides in your chart. This is the house where you can take greatest advantage of the Mars transit at this time.

Mars is a fiery energy and Leo is a fire sign. The temptation to go and do something, perhaps even something big or grandiose, could be strong. If it involves having a good time, especially during the Holiday Season, go for it. This is not a time to just sit around and think. Especially because of the long nights and short days, this could lead to seasonal affective disorder, otherwise known as depression. Leo loves to party and entertain. Use those tendencies as ways of fending off inner darkness. But keep your expectations and expenditures small. A get together with a few good friends will feel better and be more fun than trying to throw a party for neighbors and fifty friends.

The influences of a retrograde planet actually begins prior to the day of its retrogradation and continues for a while beyond its turning direct. We call these extra days “the shadow”. Mars retrograde shadow began in mid-October. After it turns direct in March the shadow will remain until mid-May. Some of us may have been feeling this shift for a while. Whether we are already feeling it or not, however, the shadow period is a time to become aware of the slowing down of our drive and impulse to act. This rate will continue even after the retrograde period is over. Tune in to your body. It will let you know when and at what rate to slow down, stop, review, plan, when to go forward and when to pick up speed in the New Year.

Aries: Since Mars is your ruling planet, you may have a harder time during its retrograde period. It is your nature to initiate projects. Trial and error could be your mantra. Growth for you at this time involves digging all those unfinished projects out of the cabinets and garage. Completion can help you to learn one of the hardest but most important lessons for Aries: patience.

Taurus: Challenges come up from mid-month on. These could involve intimate relationships, emotional and/or financial. Be precise about your goals in these areas and state them clearly, but don’t be so stubborn about maintaining them that it creates alienation from your partner. Growth comes from your willingness to be open to innovation and experimentation. Satisfaction can come even if you don’t get everything that you want.

Gemini: The full Moon in Gemini on the first provides an opportunity to express your deepest feelings to those closest to you. This honesty could produce a sense of vulnerability, and others may feel overwhelmed with the information. In the long run, however, this type of interaction can create a sense of emotional well-being for you and feelings of stability in the relationship.

Cancer: Strong desires to be of service could manifest for you this month. This could come from actually doing something for others or by simply sharing with them information that would be beneficial for them. Mid-month in particular could bring a variety of situations and people, possibly outside your regular social circle or daily routines. Growth for you comes from being discriminating about what to share, with whom, at what time and in what way.

Leo: Physical activities, including holiday shopping and party giving should be done early in the month. Feelings of love and generosity will abound for you at that time. After that, pay attention to the energy that you actually feel in your body. If you run through an internal stop sign you could feel very depleted by the holidays or early in the New Year.

Virgo: Early month could bring conflicts or power struggles with children or lovers. Be clear about your goals and needs in those relationships. Growth can come from sticking up for yourself. One option, to resolve at least some of the issues, is to play. This could be in an artistic context or simply doing something that you find fun and enjoyable. Doing something like that with whomever you are in conflict with makes it a particularly delicious experience.

Libra: This is a good time for you to do some deep introspective contemplation. Writing, either in journal or creative form, could be a good way to access valuable internal information. It doesn’t matter if you share this with anyone. It’s a way to gain perspective about yourself. Being at home and sharing time with family and good friends could bring some deep bonding and emotional fulfillment.

Scorpio: Although Mars is the co-ruler of Scorpio, you might have an easier time during its retrograde period than other signs do. The key is not to try to do too much. Powerful feelings of love and generosity could give you a false sense of energy and you could wind feeling depleted. Take advantage of the good impulses, but remember to tune in to realistic energy limits and boundaries.

Sagittarius: Physically and socially there is an abundance of energy for you, especially early in the month. You could feel drawn to be of service to others in your community or simply to share your positivity with those closest to you. Either way, compassion and concern for others helps to boost your spirit and your consciousness during the holiday season.

Capricorn: This is a time for deliberate and methodical activities. Slowing down is good, but don’t stop doing what you enjoy and what is productive. Growth comes from learning to share with others in balanced and harmonious ways. You don’t have to lead the parade or take responsibility to make sure everyone else is having a good time. If others see you enjoying yourself, they can follow your example by making sure they are benefiting from their own experience.

Aquarius: Take time to go within this month. This could take the form of a spiritual retreat, extended periods of meditation or having fun with art projects. Whatever activity works for you, opportunities lay in spiritual growth and consciousness development. Being with others who share the same form of communion enhances the potential of the experience for all concerned.

Pisces: Powerful feelings of compassion and a drive to be of service to others abound for you all month. There may be challenges to your philosophical points of view, but the confidence to maintain your beliefs helps to overcome those disputes. Growth comes from developing the attention to detail that enables you to be most effective in your contributions.

Rio Olesky: Astrology October 2009

Many people are aware of the planetary alignment that peaks at the winter solstice 2012. There is some concern that these transits will challenge us in ways that alter our reality forever. For some people this has become a terrifying probability. To allay those fears, let’s realize that the build-up to that alignment is already happening. In case you’ve noticed that life is getting very challenging at both the individual and collective levels, congratulations. You are paying attention. With that awareness, we can choose to work with these energies as we desire, rather than simply waiting for the affect of those influences to minimize the quality of our lives.

The alignment involves three main planets, all of them powerful energies of change. All three will be in cardinal signs at that time. Cardinal means active, assertive and initiating. Cardinal signs like to get things going and if they don’t work out, trying different behaviors until we are successful. One thing to note about this alignment is that we are not locked into anything. The more freedom we give ourselves to make decisions and act from a point of clarity, the more we can assume a positive result.

The planets involved are Pluto in Capricorn, Uranus in Aries and Saturn in Libra. Uranus and Saturn will oppose each other and both will square Pluto. This column has addressed the transits of Pluto in Capricorn and the opposition of Saturn and Uranus several times. This month, Pluto and Saturn move into a 90-degree angular relationship with each other. An aspect called a square. Squares bring internal tension and challenges. The square between Pluto and Saturn is particularly challenging because both energies like control. If we are centered, we use the Saturnine type of control to increase our self-discipline and direct our time and energy to achievement of clearly defined goals. If we are off-center, we experience Saturn as fear. Fear blocks movement. We could give our power away to others or demand that others give their power to us. Pluto pertains to transformation. When centered, we use Plutonian energy in the process of on-going self-analysis. We release and let go of values, behaviors, choices and assumptions that we made in the past which were either inaccurate at that time or which we have outgrown. If we are off-center, we can compulsively cling to outmoded patterns or ways of being after they have grown stale or stagnant.

One way to work on creating a desirable outcome to the alignment of 2012 is to work on the Pluto-Saturn square now. This will be with us in varying degrees from now until then.
If we are off-center, we will tend to manifest the lower octave expression of these combined energies. This could involve a decrease in physical energy, sometimes including health challenges. We could be confronted with increased levels of work and responsibility even as we feel depleted. This experience could lead to enforced restrictions, possibly due to the heath issues, or a tendency to relate to others with extreme selfishness or ruthlessness. Lower octave expressions of Pluto usually include or lead to crises, explosions or meltdowns. Even if we are doing the work of remaining centered, and don’t deal or experience this transit as destructive, we need to be aware of others who may be overwhelmed and who are lashing out to protect themselves or preserve their toxic realities.

If we are centered, this is a wonderful aspect that can help to get insights into our oldest and deepest fears in ways that will enable us to work them through and be free of them. This is a great transit through which to pay off old debts to others (whether they be financial, emotional or moral) and transform your relationship to that person or situation accordingly. In general, this is an aspect that could lead to new beginnings of life goals, relationship behaviors and even rebirths of old relationships.

One of the biggest challenges of this transit is to realize that it requires us to confront ourselves. By resolving inner conflicts we develop a new awareness of ourselves, others and the nature of life and our place in it. This is very profound stuff that could lead to new levels of empowerment and liberation. If we don’t engage in this inner struggle, we could direct the energies to confronting others. We could feel victimized by others or by life. The reality is that whatever we find confronting us at this time was caused by things we activated in the past. The primary place others have in this transit is to test ourselves. If we create new behaviors that lead to new levels of harmony and fulfillment, we are doing the work and are on track. But if we are continually embroiled in turmoil with others, regardless of who initiates the conflict, or if our lives are constantly crashing and burning, we aren’t paying attention or at best, are being lazy.
Dealing with Pluto transits is never easy. The ones to Saturn could be the most difficult of all. It could be tempting to try to bury what needs to be addressed and avoid the pain. Wrong. Unresolved Pluto issues keep getting bigger and more difficult. Better to jump in now, at the beginning of a long transit, and slowly and patiently work our way through the issues.

Aries: This month continues the pattern of last month: lots of energy for creativity, sports and spontaneous fun. You might decide to host the family Thanksgiving event, even if it has never appealed to you before. One caveat about this energy, however, is that it could lead to being caught up in your own enjoyment or pleasure to the point where you overlook others and become insensitive to their needs or feelings.

Taurus: This could be a very creative month for you, either in the arts, at work or in a primary relationship. In order to fulfill the potential of the period, you might need to be more open to others than you usually are. Revealing deep feelings could lead to vulnerability and even social awkwardness. It could also, however, lead to a deepening of the emotional bond between yourself and others as well as render your artwork more profound.

Gemini: Many challenges for you this month. In early month you might be a little too caustic in communication. You could come across as argumentative or insensitive to others when making a point. Later in the period, excessive idealism could leave you feeling disappointed in yourself, others, or a situation. Growth for you this month comes from spending time in introspective self-analysis. This could insure more clarity about your intention and fewer mistakes will be made.

Cancer: The full Moon in Taurus on the 2nd and the new Moon in Scorpio on the 16th could help you feel safe and secure. However, there will be challenges during these events. The full Moon could lead to being too contentious with others if you feel that they hurt your feelings. The new Moon challenge is to avoid seeing people and situations as you want them to be rather than as they are. Use the internal connection to your own emotions to guide you through these times and tensions.

Leo: Mars is transiting through Leo again this month, so your energy level is high across the board. Use this to be more expressive and more physical. Growth comes from tuning in to others. Even though you may be having a good time, others may not be. Although it isn’t necessarily your fault that they aren’t doing well, nor you job to fix it, being thoughtful may mean being more restrained while avoiding feeling repressed.

Virgo: You may feel quite relieved now that Saturn is no longer in Virgo. You could be more open to new experiences and less burdened by feelings of guilt or responsibility. This is a good time to create or explore new projects, especially those that involve relationships to family (either immediate or extended), your home or situations at work. Growth comes from being more self-affirming than you may normally be and feeling comfortable initiating new activities.

Libra: What a double whammy: first Saturn enters Libra at the end of October and then it immediately is squared by Pluto. From time to time you may feel like you just walk into a brick wall. This is going to be a long transit, so be patient with your process. The harmony in your life will definitely be challenged. Growth for you can come from realizing that harmony can be temporarily set-aside in the interests of clarity and resolving relational difficulties. A greater, more fulfilling harmony will come about later.

Scorpio: Pluto is your co-ruling planet. As such, many of the challenges inferred by its square to Saturn could confront you. If you are a Scorpio who tends to be self-aware through consistent self-analysis, you could experience profound growth over the next three years. This could manifest both in your relationship to yourself as well as your interaction with life. Give yourself permission to change anything that doesn’t fit, from relationship needs and behaviors to professional goals to artistic expression.

Sagittarius: Your challenge this period is to avoid responding to others’ difficulties or despair by being too generous with your time and energy. Nothing wrong with compassion and a sincere desire to help, but many of the challenges people are experiencing at this time are monumental. A well-told joke or story and a little pep talk won’t really cut it. Plus, by being overly focused on others you might overlook your own issues. Growth comes from trying to function socially in ways that are considerate of everyone’s needs and feelings, including your own.

Capricorn: Pluto is in Capricorn; your ruling planet Saturn is squaring Pluto. So you may either take the collective challenges we are all experiencing too personally, or feel as if it’s your problem to fix. If the former is your experience you could respond with an immense show of force and then get locked into power struggles. If the latter feels more correct, you could feel overwhelmed with guilt and take on burdens that aren’t yours. One fundamental task for the next three years is to continually work on limits and boundaries between yourself and others.

Aquarius: This could be a period when social activities flow easily for you. The challenges lie in spiritual growth and consciousness development. Test your assumptions about the nature of life and your place in it. Deepen your insight into your intentions. Cultivate your relationship to the Divine. These activities are best done with planning and organization.

Pisces: Quality time alone daily is always a good idea for you. This month it is almost imperative. Miscommunication and misperceptions could abound leading to mental confusion and social alienation. Once the clarity that comes from your alone time manifests, your relationship to both self and others will improve.

Astrology October 2009 - Rio Olesky

Saturn is one of the movers and shakers of the solar system. It provides us with the energy to take responsibility for our lives. It enables us to feel empowered in the creation of our reality. The transits of Saturn tell us where work needs to be done. It indicates what area of our life that needs definition and something to achieve. If we are successful in realizing the goals, we remove blockages from our path and avoid feeling fearful and limited.

Saturn transits through each sign for approximately 2 years. On October 29th, Saturn will move into Libra. It will remain there until April 2010 when it retrogrades back into Virgo until July, at which time it moves into Libra and stays there until October 2012.

Libra is the sign of harmony and balance. Two of its primary points of focus are social interaction and the arts. Socially, Libra is oriented toward one-to-one relationship in the personal life and justice and equality collectively. Artistically, Libra is sensitive to aesthetics, either nature-made or human-made. It can also be drawn to creating beauty in various mediums.

With Saturn in Libra, therefore, we will be challenged to define specific goals that we would like to achieve both socially and creatively in the next few years. If we don‚t define any goals, or do any work in these areas, we are liable to feel blocked in them. For example, we could feel limited in our options to either begin a new relationship or improve an existing one. One way out of that involves taking responsibility to define what we need and what we offer to a partner. Then define a strategy that can be employed in very concrete ways that is designed to alter behavioral patterns and achieve the goals. This could pertain to any important one-to-one relationship, personal and romantic or professional. This could also involve our desire to become active in a cause that pertains to social justice. Change will occur when we are clear about our goals, pursue them diligently and are realistic about our limits and boundaries. Without those parameters, we might project the cause of our frustration onto the partner or the situation in general. We might even feel too fearful of rejection to even address these issues within ourselves, let alone interactively. Sometimes, lack of awareness and work in this area can leave us in a codependent state, feeling that if we can at least satisfy our partner‚s needs and desires that somehow that will bring us happiness and satisfaction. In fact, that strategy leads to increased frustration.
Similarly, strive to become aware of creative goals. Think of the arts in a broad context, not limited to the so-called plastic arts‚ writing, painting, sculpting or music. Flower arranging, cooking, interior design (even a new coat of paint in the kitchen) are also artistic endeavors that can bring increased harmony and pleasure. Without clearly defining a format and a goal, we could feel creatively stuck. We might fear that others won‚t enjoy or appreciate our efforts and judge us as not being good enough or acceptable in some way.

The lower octave of Libra is experienced through indecision, often accompanied by valuing others‚ opinions or needs above our own. We put the creation and maintenance of the harmony of a relationship or an environment as the only important goal to achieve. The main problem with that goal, however, is that it can gloss over our own needs and feelings. The higher octave of Libra enables us to be thoughtful of others and relating to them with tact and diplomacy. Negotiation and compromise are prioritized over the need for positive feedback from others. Saturn in Libra is a transit that enables us to find an internal balance point. First we tune in to ourselves. Then, we define our needs. Then we share that information with others with the intention of creating a relationship that is equitable and fulfilling for both parties. By extension, we also work to create a harmonious environment that is aesthetically pleasing, and maximizes the potential for many people to function effectively in that context and benefit from our efforts.
Remember to personalize this transit by noting what house in your natal chart is occupied by the sign Libra. That is the area of your life experience wherein this work will need to be done over the next few years.

Aries: Early month is a good time to try new things, especially if they involve home and family. Be open to inspiration that may require some innovation or experimentation on your part. Later in the month, be careful that your natural tendency to be your authentic self at all times doesn’t push you into narcissism. Growth for you this month comes from being willing to negotiate and compromise with others while remaining true to yourself.

Taurus: Many challenges for you this month, mostly occurring mid-month. One of the points of contention will revolve around your need for stability in the face of unexpected and possibly destabilizing changes. One way out is to be clear about where you are and are not willing to compromise. Another important point involves self-discipline but stops short of being excessively self-limiting.

Gemini: Working on mental discipline in early month enables you to take advantage of opportunities for change, either at work or in family matters. Mid-late month brings the energy for self-exploration and the ability to understand yourself at deeper levels. Joy, faith and compassion are available throughout the month. Tuning in to them can bring clarity and awareness of opportunities in other areas.

Cancer: The full Moon in Aries on the 3rd could bring issues at work to a head that have been simmering for a while. Growth for you comes from knowing yourself and speaking your truth. The new Moon on the 17th in Libra brings feelings of joyfulness and optimism and opportunities for positive social activities, creative inspiration or expansion of faith.

Leo: This is a month when your natural tendencies to be joyful and generous can be expressed. Social activities involving partners and family should bring fulfillment. Your energy level should increase significantly from mid-late month. Use this to be physically active in whatever ways you choose, but be careful to avoid gross ego-centrism that would lead to contention between yourself and others.

Virgo: Creative and social energy abounds for you this month. Growth comes from developing the self-awareness that will enable you to be confident enough to openly express what you feel in either context. This is also a good time to find solutions to health or financial issues. Mental discipline is strong during this period, but avoid tendencies to focus only on the negative.

Libra: Six planets will be passing through Libra this month, so the information about Saturn‚s transit is particularly important to you. The key is to find or create balance in your life. Strive to be thoughtful but not co-dependent, diplomatic but not superficial, artistic but not dilitantish. The most important component of these transits is you. Try not to externalize the energy to the point where you are seeing yourself through others.

Scorpio: Intellectual or spiritual inspiration could be profound, especially early in the month. Challenges could come from the desire to be expressive, combined with your natural tendency to be private. Growth comes from taking the time to get clear about your need to feel safe to share, with whom and at what time. Transformation can come from being open in the right time and place.

Sagittarius: This is a time to implement changes in your social life that you might have been contemplating for several months. There should be the support from others to do this, either in the form of opportunities that enable the integration of new patterns or from those who notice and appreciate your changes.

Capricorn: Early to mid-month is the time to put some finishing touches on projects you have been working on for some time. Refine and perfect what you have already done. Late month, the Saturn in Libra transit challenges you to start the work on relationship stated above. Failing to do so could lead to power struggles and control issues in important relationships.

Aquarius: You may feel pushed, pulled and prodded for most of this month. Much of the struggle could involve areas that have been challenging for about a year, namely finance and relationship. Growth comes from clarification of your values. Get in touch with your inherent resources that provide the clarity and strength to know that you can overcome the difficulties and, in the long run, prevail.

Pisces: While others around you may be challenged at this time, you might find smooth sailing. Growth comes from being compassionate and serviceful to those who need your support, without falling into the martyr role. Take advantage of the harmonious, supportive energies to enhance both your social and spiritual lives.

Astrology September 2009 Rio Olesky

Wheel of Light
Rio Olesky
September 2009

Saturn opposition Uranus is a challenging combination of energies locked in a contentious aspect. We experienced this from October of 2008 through March of 2009. It returns for a third and final passage March-August 2010. This month it re-appears briefly. What it will bring and how those energies will play out is the question of the month.

Two previous oppositions of these two planets can provide keys as to how their energies can be expressed. The first of these occurred in the mid-1960s. It was a time when reality seemed to be backwards, standing on its head while it was being turned inside-out. At that time anything that was traditional or accepted as normal was at least called into question and quite possibly eliminated, at least from the lives of many people. Collectively this was the period that began what later came to be called the culture wars. It seems as if from that point on the culture and consciousness of this country was split into two rival factions. On the left were the hippies, yippies and everyone else who broke out of the boredom and stability of the 1950s and early 1960s. Revolution (Uranus) was in the air. For those people this was an exciting time, filled with anti-war protests and civil rights legislation that changed this country and ultimately led to the first African-American being elected President. On the right people became alarmed at the growing sense of independence exhibited by the students and intelligentsia. Those in the right wing camp became supportive of the USA being the world‚s policeman. They flocked to their churches to become reborn in the name of Jesus and many eventually sought to transform the country into a theocracy. The forces of the progressive left (Uranus) and the forces of the conservative right (Saturn) were locked in battle. When Ronald Reagan was elected President it seemed as if the pro-Saturn faction had won. In fact, it was only a temporary victory.

Fast-forward 40 years. The Presidential election of 2008 reversed the previous decision. That was when the forces of innovation finally overcame their conformist opposition. Barack Obama won the election and became an international cultural sensation. So what happens this month? How will these forces interact this time? And what can we as individuals do to take advantage of this transit?

The reason that this opposition is back is due to the retrogradation of Saturn. It was retrograde in the spring and now, moving direct, caught up with Uranus. The latter is retrograde and will turn direct and catch up with Saturn in March 2010. When planets retrograde it provides an opportunity to review what we have done during its period of direct motion. So now we can review and, if necessary, revise what we did last fall through early spring. One of the points of consideration is President Obama himself. How is he doing? Is he still the Golden Child of the left or are there enough blemish-based decisions that have us scratching our heads and wondering if he‚s got it right after all. Or maybe some of the flash has faded, and we are able to be more realistic. We can accept the job he‚s doing and even approve or agree, while still seeing him more as a person and less as a hero. The times are too complicated and demanding to assume he will still warrant high approval ratings, but hopefully a majority of the electorate will appreciate the intelligence and effort he is putting out.

On the personal level, we are each still battling the demons of restriction. If we find that we are inhibiting our freedom in some way, hoping to gain favor from some person of authority in our life, we are off center. If we are acting as the authority figure and attempting to control and restrict others, we are off center. The challenge of this opposition is to integrate the energy of freedom, uniqueness and inspiration (Uranus) with that of direction, structure and goals (Saturn). One way to do this is by noting what house axis this opposition is triggering in our personal horoscope. This will provide direction about what areas of our life that require attention.

One of the keys to working with Saturn is to realize that it is the energy of personal authority and personal responsibility. The more responsibility we take for ourselves the more authority we have to create the life we choose to live. The degree and manner in which we accept limits (Saturn) the more freedom (Uranus) and empowerment we will feel. One effective methodology is to establish a structure in our life that coincides with the house axis mentioned above. If we define something we would like to achieve and how we propose to achieve it, we affirm that we are in charge and are the prime authority figure in our lives. In so doing, we are also providing ourselves with the freedom necessary to creatively, inventively succeed.

Similarly, by noting which house Uranus is located in we can work with the perspective provided by the opposition to notice the ways we may be stuck by fear, habit or lack of imagination. These qualities can limit or block us from being true to who we are and accomplishing what is important to us. Once again, we prioritize personal responsibility. This time we do so in ways that enable us to experimentally break out of old patterns and bring excitement and inspiration to our lives.

This aspect will be in play through August of next year, but after this month it will be a mere shadow until it returns in full force next spring. Use this month as a time to create both structure and freedom, a time to create viable rules to live by that will be supportive to our process of awakening and liberation.

Aries: This is a time to look within. That implies both on the inner and outer planes. On the inner, strive for a new relationship to yourself. Spend some time getting to know your true-self, from the inside out. How do you feel about the different situations and relationship in your life? What work and what doesn‚t? On the outer planes, spend some time with family and close friends. This could also be a good time to start a major project that pertains to your home.
Taurus: A highly creative period for you. This could be expressed artistically, financially or in a relationship with children. In addition, the door of your heart is wide open, especially in mid-month. Growth for you this month comes from freely sharing the love (and creativity) that is given to you unconditionally from the universe, but in ways that are healthy and appropriate for all concerned, including you.

Gemini: Abundant challenges for you this month require that you take some time getting centered daily. In early to mid-month, difficulty around money, possibly in relationship to your children or partner, could generate some stimulating, but unpleasant conversations. Mid-late month, questions around limits and boundaries between yourself and others, especially family members or employer, make it crucial that you know who you are and what your intentions are in the situation..

Cancer: The new Moon in Virgo on the 18th could bring to light feelings or thoughts that you‚ve had about certain family members or good friends. These issues could run the gamut between someone‚s expectations and someone else‚s needs. Pay attention to being undermined this month. Anyone attempting do to so should confronted. Depending on their willingness to engage could determine the future of that relationship.

Leo: Financial issues could surface in mid-month between yourself and a partner. It could be business or personal. Growth for you comes from engaging in open-minded debate in which you both get to express your opinions and values. Being willing to compromise now will minimize more intense confrontations later on.

Virgo: The Saturn-Uranus opposition is along the Virgo-Pisces axis. Saturn, a grounded, practical energy, is in Virgo, an earth sign. That part is easy for you. Hard work, conscientiousness and a sharp, analytical mind is what Virgo is all about. Dealing with the subtleties and sensitivities of Pisces is another matter. Growth for you this month comes from opening to others emotionally, and relating to them accordingly.

Libra: Your aesthetic nature runs strong this month. Early month could bring the orientation to be artistically expressive in ways that will bring recognition from others. Late month creativity should be expressed more for its own sake, regardless of the feedback. Throughout the month the creative imagination is providing powerful impetus for expression. Growth comes from taking the time to let the energy flow.

Scorpio: Problems that you have ruminating about for a while could surface this month. Growth for you comes from thinking through the issues so deeply and thoroughly that you can afford to reveal your opinions calmly and let the listener perceive the truth on their own. Failure to have such certainty could lead to caustic remarks and a proliferating conflict.
Sagittarius: This is a good time to review your relationships. In the recent past you may have been overly generous to someone, or overly expectant of something from them. Instead of feeling drained or disappointed, re-assess your opinion of who they are. It probably won‚t change the relationship overtly, but the reality check will help you feel better and in the long run make the relationship function more realistically.

Capricorn: Since Saturn is your ruling planet, we might assume that you will be slammed by its opposition to Uranus. That may be partly true, but what is also true is that the aspect can provide a tremendous amount of creative energy. This is a great time to do some major troubleshooting in your life. Define problem areas and creatively find solutions. Thinking in new ways about old problems helps to find new solutions as well.

Aquarius: Saturn and Uranus are the co-ruling planets of Aquarius. So the opposition brings into clear focus the paradox of your nature. On the one hand, you love freedom ˆ being who you are and doing whatever you choose. On the other hand, you like structure, stability and being in control. Growth for you this month comes from working on self-discipline as the means to personal liberation. Let others have the same freedom you crave.

Pisces: The full Moon in Pisces on the 4th provides a short-term opportunity to look within for spiritual and artistic inspiration. This would be a good time for a retreat or to block out some time from your normal routines in order to strive for a more transcendent connection to life.

ASTROLOGY - Wheel of Light - March 2009

Rio Olesky has more than 30 years experience in the science of astrology.
This column pertains to March 2009

A planet is said to be retrograde when it appears to stop, turn around and go back in the direction it just came from. This is clearly an optical illusion caused by the difference in orbital rate and shape between that planet and the earth. All the planets, except the Sun and earth's Moon, take a turn in retrograde motion. The fundamental meaning of any planet when retrograde is twofold. First, we experience and express the energy associated with that planet in a more personal way. Thus one potential problem is that the expression of the energy is so subjective that it doesn‚t connect with other people. The second point is that when a planet is retrograde it is retracing its steps, traveling where it has just been. This implies that during the retrograde period we have the opportunity to review what we have been doing relative to the expression of that energy when the planet was direct, if we find something in the review process.

This month, Venus turns retrograde on the 6th. It will remain retrograde until April 17th. Venus pertains to three primary life experiences. One is relationship, since Venus is the energy of love and affection. It can provide clues about what we need in that relationship and can suggest beneficial behaviors that will enable us to meet those needs. Venus also pertains to money. As the ruling planet of Taurus, Venus relates to our needs for security. Finally, Venus represents beauty. Anything to do with the arts, therefore, falls under the dominion of Venus. When Venus is retrograde, it is time to review what our needs, inclinations and behaviors are in those areas. If we find anything that doesn't work, doesn't fulfill or feel right, this is time to change or at least to create a strategy that will alter our experience of Venusian qualities.

In terms of relationship, reflect on your degree of satisfaction. If you feel good about yourself and your partner, and enjoy the interaction between you, stay the course. But if you feel frustrated and unfulfilled, the question is: why? Start by redefining your needs in that relationship. Are they realistic in the context of that connection? Have you verbalized those needs? Has your partner heard you? When Venus is retrograde we may tend to blame the partner for our unhappiness. Although that may be partly true, the real work lies with the relationship to yourself. As you bring that up to date, you realize that by changing yourself you can change the relationship. If the work on self doesn't change the relationship dynamic, then it might be time to reconsider the viability of the whole thing. But, until then, hang in there. This is not a time when all issues get resolved. It is actually just the beginning. The time of review and redirection. The resolution comes over time after Venus turns direct.

In terms of money, review the ways in which you deal with it. What do you spend money on? With Venus we are talking primarily about necessities, not toys or luxuries.
Especially in the current economy changing our budgeting and spending patterns is the necessary thing to do. It's interesting that the FED, the private bank that is beyond our government's control and yet which has ultimate dominion over our banking and financial system, often changes interest rates when Venus is retrograde. It could go up or down, sometimes in both directions during the five weeks of the retrograde.

This could be a good time to decide on a new course of earning money. Again, this isn't necessarily the time to actually get a new job or quit the old one. Strategize and contemplate your options. This is more a time of making plans for changing in the future rather than acting on them now.

If your job and money are acceptable, you may want to simply cut back on spending and decide to save more. A wise decision at this time.

Our values about beauty and aesthetics are also under review at this time. This makes it a dicey time to spend money, especially either on big ticket items like houses and cars, or on items that are appreciated for their beauty, like jewelry, art work or even expensive clothing. We may find things desirable and attractive at this time that will appear quite different once Venus turns direct. Similarly this isn't a good time for an early spring cleaning. You might find that the ugly, useless object you discarded was something that has great appeal and value, which you failed to note during the retrograde period.

When a planet is retrograde it is time to reflect, realign and when appropriate, reboot our lives. Especially in these times of change, taking time out of our normal routines to note where we are, how we got here and where we intend to direct our energy from this point has great value. This is a time to resist the temptation to keep doing the same things. Taking a break enables us to reassess things which in turn provides new clarity, new motivation and ultimately greater growth and fulfillment.

Aries: This could be an awkward time for you. Your ruling planet Mars enters Pisces on the 14th and is in aspect to Neptune the first half of March. This calls for you to be more reflective and internal. Focus on emotional or psychological issues that need attention. Expressing yourself artistically is a good way to channel this energy. Be open to different kinds of inspiration and even different kinds of outlets.

Taurus: Since Venus is your ruling planet you may find that many of the most significant parts of your life are up for review. Venus is in Aries, one of the most independent of the signs. Developing a greater sense of autonomy, in your relationship or in making decisions about money or the arts, is something to contemplate. Early month could bring support for this process from friends or colleagues.

Gemini: A lot going on for you this month. You may feel your intuition and spiritual energy greatly stimulated, especially in early March. You may also feel intellectually inspired in ways that lead to innovations in what you do or how you do it. Growth for you this month comes from remaining grounded in the face of all this input. That way you can make practical use of the information instead of feeling confused or overloaded.

Cancer: The full Moon in Virgo on the 10th could bring some challenges in the work place. You may want to go forward with something only to find that a superior is blocking you in some way. Or, if you are boss, your sense of creativity or desire for new beginnings is thwarted. Being patient in either scenario enables you to plan for a more effective outcome.

Leo: From early to mid month you may feel as if you are the rope in a game of tug-of-war. You may want to change or do something exciting and adventurous only to find that circumstances or people are blocking you. The way out, and growth for you this month, comes from spending time in due diligence. The more research, the better and swifter the outcome.

Virgo: The full Moon in Virgo on the 10th will bring emotional clarity. Growth for you comes from tuning into those feelings. Greater emotional self-awareness can lead to greater fulfillment in your social life, especially in close, personal relationships. Taking responsibility to express those feelings can enable you to feel more empowered and liberated.

Libra: Venus is your ruling planet, so its retrogradation may be more noticeable and challenging for you than for other signs. The biggest challenge could be to your sense of harmony. Usually you like to go along and get along. You want others to like you. During this period, harmony may be a rare commodity and you may find it more difficult to read or relate to others. Venus is in Aries, an independent sign. Therefore, spend some time developing the relationship to yourself. Feel good about being who you are.

Scorpio: Emotionality and intuitive awareness are highlights of the month for you. Much of that focus could be on family, especially children. Or, if you are unmarried or have no children, tune inward to discover some creative inspiration. You could also focus family energy on extended family or simply in your own community or neighborhood.

Sagittarius: You may be one of the few signs that actually enjoys this Venus retrograde period. That's because in general this is a year to expand your social circle and this month there may some interesting developments on that front. Not all will be enjoyable, but they will challenge your ability to be flexible and open to new social experiences.

Capricorn: Family relationships could be a point of focus for you this month. If it's with your immediate family, reflect on your expectations and behaviors in that arena. You may find that changing your behavior leads to greater happiness. It could also be with your extended family and that could actually continue a pattern that has been going on for several months. In that context, dialogue and compromise offer ways out.

Aquarius: Four planets will be traveling through Aquarius at different times this month. The good news is obvious: energy is flowing in ways that are inherently comfortable to you. The bad news also could exist. That is, there could also be tendencies to relate to others in ways that are impractical, haughty or superficial. Growth for you comes from using this time to be more inclusive and accepting of others even as you take time to ground your insights and inspirations.

Pisces: This could be a forward looking period for you. You might find supportive and enjoyable social interaction. Or, the same energy could promote artistic inspiration. You could also be more self-aware to the point of being more direct, assertive and communicative in your relationships.
